Photography Political and Historical Image Time line

A Greek invented photography the philosopher Aristotle (384 to 322 BCE) came up with the theory of the ” camera obscura ” ( and some people think that it was this that created modern day science ) but we didn’t start using it until 1830’s with the Daguerreotype  .The first image  ” Window in the abbey ” by William Henry fox talbot was also created and photography was starting to come into use and help our first reasonable police force

Then in 1840’s came the Calotype where poor people were starting to be seen in and come into photography more but the rich were not keen on this happening for reasons such as showing the reality of war e.g ” dead bodies in war ” as this would have a detrimental effect on the amount of people that would enlist to fight for their country . You wouldn’t of expected this but it makes absolute sense that photography was thought of as ” not a serious endeavour ” thus being it was for expected that women did it . For the first time the calotype enabled us to produce lots of prints from one negative it was labeled as the pencil of nature and we Used it to talk about our world . Societys consciousnees in that era thought of the camera as a copying device of their world which is very different to how we think of it now .

In 1850 we had wet plate collodion which was invented in 1851, the wet collodion photographic process produced a glass negative and a beautifully detailed print. Preferred for the quality of the prints and the ease with which they could be reproduced, the new method thrived from the 1850s until about 1880 . Colour photography came about in  1860 with Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell who dabbled in color theory throughout his life, eventually producing the first color photograph in 1861. Maxwell created the image of the tartan ribbon by photographing it three times through red, blue, and yellow filters, then recombining the images into one color composite .

The Box brownie was invented mass produced and publicly available in the 1900’s where then we start to see poor people in pictures exponentially more  as it was used in photojournalism and as a political tool ww1. It was also a time of mass austerity and the suffragette movement , where members of a women’s organization formed movements (for the right to vote) in the late 19th and early 20th century, particularly militants in Great Britain such as members of the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU).

In 1920 the 35 mm Leica was invented so it affected photography and images because we then had a highly portable camera which was easy to use and create images with this was when montage and realism started , and an important book was written called ” * the work of art and the age of mechanical reproduction “.

1930 we had ww2 , and the f64 group did photography for photography’s sake but were not interested in its practical uses and theories .

1940 Magnum was created with the black border around their images to show it was ” The Truth ” . Books were also starting to be written on the history of photography even though it hadn’t yet got started as the tool it represents today .

1950 Sputnik and the image of the man on the moon . The photographic book of ” The Americans “by Robert Frank , starts representing real life and changing views about our culture .

1960 JFK icp .

1970 The theory of photography was starting to be formed . Terrorism was in its infancy and thrived off its publicity in the media via images to spread its terrible message of fear around the globe . Margaret Thatcher came up with the idea to deny them the oxygen of publicity and prevent this . The idea of the facsimile a method or device for transmitting documents, drawings, photographs was formed .The Photographers’ Gallery was founded in London in 1971, and was the first independent gallery in Britain that was devoted entirely to photography

1980 we had the Reagan assassination portrayed in colour and on digital across the world .

In September 1988 a demo was shown to Adobe’s internal creative team, and they loved the product. A license agreement was struck soon after, and Photoshop 1.0 was shipped in February 1990 after 10 months of development. Now we have questionable realism in a photograph , which previously was deemed as the real and truthful is now open to manipulation , as with photoshop he image can be altered however we wish and so becomes a tool which can be used to control the masses emotions and the way their minds think .
